Why plant protein powders keep testing positive for lead
In short: plants take up heavy metals from soil; processing concentrates plant material many-fold; and protein powders are consumed in large daily servings. Multiply those three factors and a product can exceed California's 0.5 µg/day lead safe harbor while every individual ingredient looks unremarkable. Our first accredited test found 0.772 µg of lead in a single serving — 154% of the safe harbor.
When a protein powder tests hot for lead, people reach for villain stories — a negligent factory, a contaminated batch, a cover-up. The more uncomfortable truth is that the mechanism is ordinary. It's built into what these products are.
Factor one: plants mine the soil
Lead, cadmium, and arsenic occur naturally in soil, and decades of leaded gasoline, industrial emissions, and certain pesticides added more. Plants absorb these metals through their roots along with the minerals they're after. Some crops are particularly efficient accumulators — cocoa, rice, leafy greens, and root vegetables among them. No amount of "organic" certification changes this; organic standards govern pesticides and inputs, not the geochemistry of the field.
Factor two: processing concentrates
A protein isolate is, by design, a concentration process: take a large mass of peas, rice, or hemp and reduce it to the protein fraction. Metals bound to that fraction concentrate along with it. Chocolate flavoring adds cocoa — one of the more reliable lead and cadmium carriers in the food supply. A finished powder is therefore the concentrated residue of far more plant material than any ordinary meal contains.
Factor three: the serving size does the rest
Prop 65 exposure is computed per day, and protein powders are consumed in 30-40 gram scoops, often daily, sometimes twice daily. A trace concentration that would be irrelevant in a garnish becomes a meaningful daily dose at scoop scale. This is why our selection criteria weight serving size so heavily: the same parts-per-billion number can be compliant in a spice jar and actionable in a tub.
What the testing record shows
Independent testing programs — from the Clean Label Project to investigations by Consumer Reports — have repeatedly found measurable heavy metals in plant-based protein powders, with plant-based products generally testing higher than whey or egg-based ones. Our own first test is consistent with that record: 0.772 micrograms of lead per labeled 33-gram serving of a top-selling plant protein powder, measured by ICP-MS at an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory. That is 154% of California's daily safe-harbor level for lead — from one serving, before you eat anything else that day.
What a consumer can actually do
Short of a home mass spectrometer, you can't verify a powder yourself. You can: prefer products whose makers publish full, batch-specific certificates of analysis from accredited laboratories (not summary "purity" badges); treat chocolate-flavored plant proteins as the highest-risk shelf in the category; notice serving size, because your exposure scales with it; and treat the absence of a Prop 65 warning on a high-risk product not as reassurance but as a claim someone should verify.
